PostHeaderIcon Best hemorrhoid treatment?

Is there a specific brand thats best? Is there a specific method thats best (wipes, gel, lotion, pads, ect)? Approx. how long does it take to work?

These are prescription products which have helped me.
#1. Anucort – hc 25mg. It’s a Hydrocortisone supository.
#2. Analpram HC. Application exactly like Preparation H.

I’ve had a problem similar to this for many years. I recently had a colonoscopy (sp) and the test required removal of two inflamed polyps. — (non cancerous)

* ** I was required to not eat foods with roughage for two weeks. During that time my problem literally dissapeared. I’ve lived on shredded wheat in the morning for years. I switched to Cheerios, stopped popcorn and nuts. My food intake was clocely monitored by my wife (Rn.) I felt much better at the end of the two wks..***

I agree wholeheartedly with consuming Metamucil type products daily and drink a minimum of 6 glasses of water or juice products. Try to limit juices to cranberry, grape, cran-apple or cran-raspberry.

Stay away from acid foods. Tomato’s, orange juice, pasta etc.

All these suggestions came from my Gastorenterologist. (sp) Dr. of human intestines. Hope hope you feel better soon.

OTC treatment for hemorrhoids are just that treatment of current inflammation, they are not cures. We don’t know the exact nature of your situation so determining an exact best treatment is difficult. You will need to experiment with what works best for you. If you don’t see improvement in 10 to 14 days you need to be seen by your doctor for other interventions. Use a fiber laxative and stool softeners can help, soak in warm water and try any of the multitude of OTC products available. Avoid straining, lifting and prolonged sitting if possible.

When hemorrhoids are badly flared up, the over the counter ointments and suppositories tend to be inadequate. You may need a prescription product which contains a steroid in order to bring down the swelling and itching. It would be used for a short period of time until you get relief, perhaps one to two weeks.

Another reason to see a doctor about it is to make sure that you don’t have something else, like a fissure (a small tear at the anus caused by large, hard stool). Treatment for fissures is slightly different than treatment for hemorrhoids.

Sometimes people will have a small blood clot in the hemorrhoid which makes it very painful. Although the doctor probably won’t do anything differently, at least you would be aware and know to expect that this would take an extra few weeks to totally settle compared to a plain old hemorrhoid.

One thing to remember is to keep the stools as soft and regular as possible with lots of fluid intake and fibre. A good start is a fibre supplement which contains psyllium, like Metamucil. Start with a half dose for a few days then go up to the full dose as per the instructions. There is no scientific data to show that stool softener medications actually work, but there is data to support the use of psyllium for maintaining stool regularity and bulk.

    Good luck.

When I had hemorrhoids, the doctor told me to take Metimucil, take warm baths at least three times a day, and use preperation H.
